Biography
Who is Wendy Williams?
Early life and education
Wendy Joan Williams was born in Asbury Park, New Jersey. She was the second of three children born to Shirley and Thomas Dwayne Williams. Her father was a school administrator, and her mother was a teacher. After race riots occurred in Asbury Park in 1970, the family relocated to Wayside, a suburb in Ocean Township, New Jersey. During her childhood, she was a Girl Scout and volunteered as a candy striper. Her parents hoped she would pursue a career in nursing.
She attended Ocean Township High School and graduated in 1982. Later, she enrolled at Northeastern University in Boston to study television communications. However, she quickly pivoted to radio to advance her professional prospects more rapidly. She graduated in 1986 with a Bachelor of Arts in communication and a minor in journalism. During her college years, she served as a DJ for the student radio station, WRBB, where she conducted her first celebrity interview with rapper LL Cool J.
Radio career beginnings
Following graduation, she began working at WVIS in the U.S. Virgin Islands. She found the role unsatisfying due to low pay and professional isolation. She eventually secured a position at WOL in Washington, D.C., but felt the station's oldies format did not suit her personality. In 1987, she joined WQHT in New York City as a weekend fill-in. After moving to a full-time overnight role, she left her position in D.C.
She later moved to WRKS, where she became part of the Wake-Up Club alongside Jeff Foxx and Spider Webb. Here, she gained attention for a gossip segment titled Dish the Dirt. Celebrities she discussed frequently contacted the station to demand her termination. By 1991, she moved to the evening drive time slot. By 1993, she was the highest-rated host in her time slot in the New York City market and received a Billboard Radio Award.
Hosting and television work
Wendy Williams eventually moved to television, hosting the nationally syndicated talk show The Wendy Williams Show from 2008 to 2021. The program covered a wide array of celebrity news and pop culture topics. Before this, she appeared in the VH1 reality series The Wendy Williams Experience in 2006.
She achieved significant recognition for her media career, earning an induction into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 2009. Also, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Beyond broadcasting, she pursued various business ventures, including a fashion line, a wig collection, and jewelry. She also authored several books.
Health and personal challenges
Due to health complications, she retired from her talk show in 2021. The following year, she was placed under a guardianship. In 2023, she received diagnoses of primary progressive aphasia and frontotemporal dementia. Legal proceedings regarding her guardianship began in December 2025 following a court-ordered medical evaluation.
A neurologist noted findings of alcohol-related dementia and recommended terminating the guardianship, as the evaluation did not indicate the presence of a progressive form of aphasia or dementia.
