Who is Yannick Noah?
Early life and background
Yannick Noah was born in Sedan, France, in 1960. His father, Zacharie Noah, was a professional footballer from Cameroon. His mother, Marie-Claire, is a French teacher and former captain of the French basketball team.
The family moved to Cameroon after a sports injury occurred in 1963. Yannick began playing tennis while living in Africa. He was discovered at age 11 by Arthur Ashe, which eventually led him to a training center in Nice in 1971.
Tennis career highlights
He turned professional in 1977 and secured his first top-level singles title in Manila in 1978. In 1983, he became the first Frenchman in 37 years to win the French Open singles title. He defeated Mats Wilander in the final of that tournament.
Yannick won the French Open doubles title in 1984 alongside Henri Leconte. Throughout his career, he earned 23 singles titles and 16 doubles titles. He reached a career-high singles ranking of world number 3 in 1986 and reached number 1 in doubles shortly after.
Music and charity work
After retiring from professional tennis, he started a career in pop and funk music. His first album, Black & What, debuted in 1991 and included the song Saga Africa. He released several other albums, including Urban Tribu in 1993 and Frontières in 2010.
He has performed at major events like the Live 8 concert in 2005. In 2010, he played a big concert at the Stade de France for nearly 80,000 people. His music career has allowed him to perform across Europe and even in the United States.

He has been married to Cécilia Rodhe and Heather Stewart-Whyte. He is also the father of Joakim Noah, who played in the NBA. He has several other children, including Joalukas, Eleejah, and Joalukas.
In 1996, French fiscal authorities accused him of holding undeclared bank accounts in three different countries. He disputed the court decision, claiming it was unconstitutional. He continues to manage various business interests, including a restaurant in Saint Barthélemy.
