Who is Youna Kang?
Education and Background
Youna Kang attended Rancho Bernardo High School in her youth. Following high school, she continued her education by attending Palomar College. She later studied at the Ringling College of Art and Design to hone her creative skills.
Before finding success as a digital creator, Youna worked at Nickelodeon. She came up with the initial idea for her virtual character while employed there before being laid off during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Creation of CodeMiko
Youna Kang created the digital persona CodeMiko using Unreal Engine software. To power the avatar, she used an Xsens motion capture suit, Manus VR gloves, and a facial tracking helmet from MOCAP Design. The character model consists of thirty-six thousand polygons.
Developing the project required a significant financial investment. Youna accumulated over twenty thousand dollars in debt to purchase her initial motion capture equipment. Early in her streaming career, she earned around three hundred dollars per month on Twitch.
Streaming Career and Breakthrough
Youna experienced her major streaming breakthrough in the year twenty twenty-one. Her sudden rise in popularity came after she went viral on Twitter and the Reddit community r/LiveStreamFails. Her broadcast style involves interviewing other content creators while operating her virtual avatar.
In twenty twenty-one, CodeMiko participated in the online amateur chess tournament known as PogChamps 3. She was coached during the event by women grandmaster Anna Rudolf and Andrea Botez, ultimately placing last in the tournament after finishing with four losses.
