Who is Yūki Gotō?
Early Life and Discovery
Yūki Gotō was born in Edogawa, Japan, on July 10, 1986. While attending middle school and completing his early education, he grew up alongside his family. His older sister, Maki Goto, was a prominent member of the girl group Morning Musume during that period.
In 1999, during his time in the sixth grade, talent scouts from Harmony Promotion spotted him at a fan event for his older sister. Following this discovery, he was placed into a new music group alongside Sonim and Ken.
EE Jump Career
The newly formed group was named EE Jump, and Yūki Gotō served as their lead rapper under the stage name Yuki. The trio made their television debut on the variety show Warau Inu no Bōken. Before their official compact disc debut, Ken departed from the lineup, leaving the remaining members to proceed as a duo.
On October 18, 2000, EE Jump released their debut single titled Love is Energy! They achieved broader mainstream success with their third single, Otto Totto Natsu da ze!, released on May 16, 2001. Despite this commercial success, Yūki Gotō experienced creative tensions and frequent arguments with staff regarding his vocal skills and performance schedule.
Controversies and Retirement
During promotions for the group fourth single, Yūki Gotō had a dispute with a female manager over tight schedules. This disagreement resulted in a physical altercation, after which he left his hotel room without permission and traveled to Tochigi Prefecture. His agency suspended his activities for three months while Sonim continued promotions alone.
He returned to the group in February 2002 after issuing an apology. However, shortly after graduating from middle school, a tabloid magazine published photographs of him with alcohol at a cabaret club while underage. Amid the resulting scandal and disagreements with his management regarding restrictions on his movement, he retired from the entertainment industry, leading to the official disbandment of EE Jump on April 13, 2002.
Legal Issues and Memoirs
On October 20, 2007, Yūki Gotō was arrested for breaking into a construction site in Edogawa, Tokyo, on July 15 of that year, where he stole 80 reels of electric cable valued at approximately one million yen. He pleaded guilty alongside two accomplices and was identified by police through his tattoos. In May 2008, the Tokyo District Court sentenced him to five and a half years in prison.
Following his release from incarceration in 2013, he published a memoir titled Sange: Gomaki no Otōto to Yobarete. The book detailed his parents' deaths, his relationship with his sister Maki, his struggles with early fame, and his experiences during and after his prison sentence.
