Who is Yuriy Vashchuk?
Early life and education
Yuriy Vashchuk was born in Chidry, Belarus, on January 24, 1983. He grew up showing an early passion for music during his childhood years. His father was a school teacher named Alexey Vashchuk, and his mother was a culture worker named Tania Vashchuk. He developed his musical interests from a young age.
For his professional education, Yuriy Vashchuk attended the Grodno College of Art. He later continued his studies at the Belarusian State University of Culture and Arts. In the year 2000, he received an invitation to work at the National Concert Orchestra of Belarus.
Musical career and achievements
Yuriy Vashchuk won his first music competition at the international contest called Scilla. He also won his first major competition on the television program Zornaya Rostan. Aside from performing as a singer, he works with foreign and Belarusian musicians as an arranger and composer. Together with L. Shirin, he wrote music for Russian movies. He also created the Belarusian television show Forward to the Past and helped design its musical theme.
Between 2011 and 2014, Yuriy Vashchuk received a series of Lira awards. These included Discovery of the Year in 2011 and Best Arranger in 2012. He won Best Author of Music in 2013 alongside Leanid Shirin for the song Belarus Velikaya. He also earned Best Performer of the Year and Best Song of the Year for Cheesecake in 2014.
Eurovision Song Contest
In 2009, Yuriy Vashchuk performed in a duet with Anna Blagova in the national contest but did not win. Before competing as a solo artist, he served as a co-writer for songs by Alyona Lanskaya, who represented Belarus in 2013. In 2014, he won the national contest and earned the right to represent Belarus at Eurovision.
Yuriy Vashchuk performed the song Cheesecake at the contest. His friend and co-writer Dmitry Novik noted that they wrote the track just five hours before the deadline. The lyrics originally contained the words Google Maps, which led to an investigation regarding trademark promotion rules. Organizers eventually had the line changed to all the maps. At the end of the grand final, Yuriy finished in 16th place with a total of 43 points.
