Early life and background
Zayn Malik: Zain Javadd Malik was born on January 12, 1993, in Bradford, West Yorkshire, in the United Kingdom. He grew up in a working class neighborhood in East Bowling with his father Yaser Malik, his mother Trisha Malik, one older sister, and two younger sisters.
He attended Lower Fields Primary School and Tong High School, which is now known as Tong Leadership Academy, in Bradford. As a teenager, he took performing arts courses, appeared in school productions, wrote raps, and boxed for two years from ages 15 to 17.
The X Factor and One Direction
In 2010, at age 17, Zayn auditioned for the seventh series of the television music competition show The X Factor in Manchester. He sang Mario's song Let Me Love You during his audition and advanced through the initial rounds.
Although he was eliminated before the final round of bootcamp, judges Nicole Scherzinger and Simon Cowell placed him with Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, and Louis Tomlinson to form the boy band One Direction. The group finished in third place on the program and signed a recording contract.
Solo career and music
Following his departure from One Direction, Zayn signed a recording deal with RCA Records and adopted the mononym Zayn for his solo work. He released his debut solo studio album, Mind of Mine, in March 2016.
The lead single from the album, Pillowtalk, debuted at number one in numerous countries, making him the first British male artist to debut at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 with a debut single. Mind of Mine also debuted at number one in the United Kingdom and the United States.
Awards and personal life
Zayn has received several music industry accolades throughout his career, including an American Music Award for New Artist of the Year and an MTV Video Music Award. He won the Billboard Music Award for New Artist of the Year twice, once as part of One Direction and again as a solo artist.
His personal life and relationships have often drawn public interest. His past partners include Perrie Edwards and Gigi Hadid.
