Biography
Who is Adam DeVine?
Early life and schooling
Adam DeVine was born in Waterloo, Iowa, to parents Dennis and Penny DeVine. He grew up in Omaha, Nebraska, where he attended Millard South High School, graduating in 2002. Later, he enrolled at Orange Coast College. While attending college, he met his future collaborator and co-star Blake Anderson.
When Adam was eleven years old, he suffered a severe accident while walking his bicycle across a road in Omaha. A truck struck him, leading to extensive injuries including broken ribs, a collapsed lung, and crushed legs. He spent significant time in a coma and required twenty-six surgeries over several years to regain his mobility. During his recovery, he used humor and celebrity impersonations to cope with his situation and deflect bullying at school.
Rise to comedy stardom
In 2006, Adam formed a sketch-comedy group called Mail Order Comedy alongside friends Blake Anderson, Anders Holm, and Kyle Newacheck. The group performed live and gained traction by posting content on platforms like MySpace and YouTube. This success led to the development of the television show Workaholics, which premiered on Comedy Central in 2011. Adam served as a creator, executive producer, and star of the series.
Building on this momentum, he hosted his own series titled Adam Devine's House Party on Comedy Central, which ran for three seasons starting in 2013. He also voiced the character Pizza Steve in the Cartoon Network animated series Uncle Grandpa beginning in 2013. His television work expanded further when he took on the recurring role of Andy, the nanny, in the ABC sitcom Modern Family.
Film and television career
Adam gained wider recognition for playing Bumper Allen in the 2012 musical comedy Pitch Perfect. He won a Teen Choice Award for his portrayal of this villainous character and returned for the 2015 sequel, Pitch Perfect 2. He also starred in other film projects such as The Intern, The Final Girls, and Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates. In 2018, he co-wrote and starred in the romantic comedy When We First Met.
Starting in 2019, he joined the cast of the HBO series The Righteous Gemstones as Kelvin Gemstone. The show centers on a world-famous family of televangelists. Throughout his career, Adam has also contributed voice work to various animated films and series, including The Lego Batman Movie, Ice Age: Collision Course, and Captain Fall. He continues to work in both live-action and voice acting roles.
Personal life and advocacy
Adam is a dedicated supporter of the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. Because he received care at a children's hospital following his own childhood accident, he visits medical facilities to share his story and offer support to patients and their families. Also, he frequently participates in United Service Organizations tours to provide entertainment for military personnel stationed around the world.
In his private life, Adam met Chloe Bridges on a film set in 2014. The couple began dating in 2015 and became engaged in 2019. They married in October 2021. In early 2024, they welcomed their son, Beau DeVine. Adam has also taken part in community events, such as serving as the celebrity monarch for the Krewe of Bacchus during New Orleans' Mardi Gras in 2023.
