Who is Aisel?
Early life and music education
Aisel Mammadova was born on July 3, 1989, in Baku, Azerbaijan. She pursued formal training in music from a young age. Her academic background includes studies at the Special Secondary Musical School and the Baku Academy of Music, which is also known as the Azerbaijan State Conservatory.
These institutions provided her with the foundation for her later work in jazz and pop performance. She eventually became a member of the Baku Jazz Center, helping to establish her reputation within the regional music scene.
Jazz career highlights
Before her mainstream success, Aisel focused heavily on jazz. She performed at the Baku International Jazz Festival in 2005 and 2006. She also took her talents to the international stage in 2009 by performing at the Montreux Jazz Festival.
Her background spans multiple musical styles, including soul, pop, and folk-pop. She combines these influences with her training as a pianist and composer.
Eurovision and national performance
In November 2017, organizers announced Aisel as the representative for Azerbaijan at the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest. Her song entry, titled X My Heart, was released in March 2018. During the first semi-final round held on May 8, she finished in 11th place with 94 points.
She earned 47 points from jury members and 47 points from the televote, including 12 points from the Greek jury. This marked the first time an Azerbaijani entry did not qualify for the final round. While she initially stated the song helped her overcome personal difficulties, she later expressed regret regarding the performance and stated she never felt a connection to the track.
Beyond Eurovision, she has performed the national anthem of Azerbaijan. This took place at the opening ceremony for the Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix in 2023. Later that same year, she was shortlisted as one of sixteen candidates for the 2024 national selection process, eventually advancing to the final group of six before she was ultimately not selected.
