Who is Aisha Tyler?
Early life and education
Aisha Nilaja Tyler was born on September 18, 1970, in San Francisco, United States. Her mother was Robin Adair Gregory, a teacher, and her father was a photographer. During her childhood, the family spent time living in Ethiopia and an ashram in Oakland, California. Her parents separated when she was ten years old, and her father raised her afterward. She attended the Ruth Asawa San Francisco School of the Arts alongside fellow students like Sam Rockwell and Margaret Cho.
She later pursued higher education at Dartmouth College, graduating in 1992. While studying there, she co-founded and sang in the Dartmouth Rockapellas, which was an all-female a cappella group. After briefly working for an advertising firm in San Francisco, she toured the country to pursue a career in comedy before moving to Los Angeles in 1996.
Television and film career
Aisha Tyler gained wider recognition in television when she hosted Talk Soup and The 5th Wheel starting in 2001. She later appeared in the ninth and tenth seasons of Friends as Dr. Charlie Wheeler, serving as Joey's and then Ross's girlfriend. Her acting credits also include playing Andrea Marino in the first season of Ghost Whisperer, Mother Nature in the final two The Santa Clause films, and Dr. Tara Lewis in Criminal Minds starting in 2015.
In addition to acting, she co-hosted CBS's The Talk for several seasons, earning a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Entertainment Talk Show Host. She began hosting Whose Line Is It Anyway? In 2013. She has also lent her voice to numerous video games, including Halo: Reach, Gears of War 3, and Watch Dogs, and voiced Lana Kane in the FX animated series Archer.
Writing and directing
Aisha Tyler expanded her creative work into print media by writing books and contributing to magazines such as Glamour, Jane, and Entertainment Weekly. Her first book, Swerve: A Guide to the Sweet Life for Postmodern Girls, was published in January 2004. Her second book, Self-Inflicted Wounds: Heartwarming Tales of Epic Humiliation, debuted in July 2013 and became a New York Times bestseller.
Moving behind the camera, she directed her first feature film, Axis, after starting a Kickstarter campaign in 2016. The movie was filmed over seven days in May 2016 and premiered at the Sarasota Film Festival in 2017. It later won an Outstanding Achievement award at the Newport Beach Film Festival before being released via video-on-demand in April 2018.
