Who is Alex O'Loughlin?
Early life and education
Alex O'Loughlin was born on August 24, 1976, in Canberra, Australia. He is of Irish and Scottish descent, with a father who worked as a physics and astronomy teacher and a mother who was a nurse. During his childhood, he has mentioned experiencing some symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder.
He pursued professional acting training at the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney. He enrolled in 1999 and graduated in June 2002 after completing a full-time, three-year Bachelor of Dramatic Art program. Before his formal studies, he gained early experience appearing in fringe theatre productions and working in short films around Sydney.
Acting career and television roles
After graduation, Alex O'Loughlin began working in the Australian television and film industry. His early credits included appearances in productions such as BlackJack: Sweet Science, Love Bytes, and White Collar Blue. In 2004, he secured his first lead film role in the production Oyster Farmer. Shortly after, he appeared in films including Man-Thing and Feed, while also starring in the Australian miniseries The Incredible path of Mary Bryant. His performance in that miniseries earned him award nominations from the Australian Film Institute and the Logie Awards.
In 2007, he took a role on the series The Shield, portraying Detective Kevin Hiatt. Later that same year, he starred as a vampire and private investigator in the CBS series Moonlight. Although the show was highly rated in its time slot, the network did not renew it for a second season. He later starred in the hospital drama Three Rivers during the 2009 to 2010 television season. In 2010, he appeared in the romantic comedy film The Back-up Plan alongside Jennifer Lopez.
Success with Hawaii Five-0
Alex O'Loughlin gained significant recognition for his role as Lieutenant Commander Steve McGarrett in the Hawaii Five-0 remake, which premiered in September 2010. The show achieved success, winning a People's Choice Award for Favorite New TV Drama. He remained with the series for ten seasons, often performing demanding stunts that resulted in several injuries, including nerve damage, torn shoulder muscles, and herniated neck discs. He considered leaving the production in 2018 due to these physical challenges, and the show officially ended in 2020.
Beyond his acting work, he became a brand ambassador for Donate Life America in 2009. He is also a dedicated practitioner of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. At the 2022 ADCC World Championship, he was promoted to a black belt in the martial art.
Personal life and family
He has a son named Saxon, born in 1997, from a previous relationship. In 2005, he began a relationship with actress and singer Holly Valance, but they separated in 2009. Later, he and his partner Malia Jones, a model and surfer, welcomed a son named Lion in 2012. The couple married in Hawaii on April 18, 2014, and he became a stepfather to her son, Spike.
