Early life and family background
Born in Kolkata, India, into a Gujarati family, Alka Yagnik was introduced to the arts by her mother, Shubha, who was a singer of Indian classical music. At the young age of six, she began singing for All India Radio in Calcutta. When she turned ten, her mother took her to Mumbai to pursue a career as a child singer. Although early industry advice suggested waiting until her voice matured, her mother persisted.
She eventually secured a recommendation to Raj Kapoor, which led her to the music director Laxmikant Shantaram Kudalkar. He offered her a choice between starting immediately as a dubbing artist or waiting to debut as a singer, and her mother chose the later path for her.
