Who is Daler Mehndi?
Early life and background
Daler Mehndi was born in Patna, Bihar, India in a Punjabi Sikh family. Born on August 18, 1967, he grew up with a strong musical background and eventually formed his own group in 1991, which included his brothers, cousins, and friends.
In 1994, Daler won the Voice of Asia International Ethnic and Pop Music Contest in Almaty, Kazakhstan, which marked an important early milestone in his musical path.
Rise to fame and hit albums
Magnasound signed Daler for a three-album contract, starting with his debut album Bolo Ta Ra Ra, which sold over 20 million copies and established him as a major pop star. The album also won him the Channel V Best Indian Male Pop Artist Award.
A year later, his second album Dardi Rab Rab surpassed the sales of his debut release. In 1997, he released his third album Balle Balle, which went multi-platinum and earned him six Channel V Awards. He also contributed to the Bollywood film Mrityudata with the popular track Na Na Na Re, featuring alongside Amitabh Bachchan.
Later career and collaborations
Throughout the 2000s, Daler continued releasing music, including the album Ek Dana in 2000, which featured the popular song Sajan Mere Satrangiya. He later forayed into playback singing for films, performing the song Ru-Ba-Ru for the film Maqbool in 2003.
In March 2014, Daler collaborated with electronic dance music artist Deadmau5 to create a remix of his 1998 hit Tunak Tunak Tun. He also launched his own record label, DRecords, in the year 2000 to support other musical artists.
Family and personal life
Daler Mehndi is married to Taranpreet Kaur, and they have four children named Gurdeep, Ajit Kaur, Prabhjot Kaur, and Rabaab Kaur. His brother Mika Singh is also a well-known singer.
In 2018, Daler was convicted of human trafficking and sentenced to two years in prison, though his sentence was suspended after serving around two months.
