Early life and background
Alexandra Maquet was born on September 27, 1988, in Lyon, France. She grew up as the eldest of four daughters in a family with a businessman father, Alain Maquet, and a painter and contemporary artist mother, Marie-Pierre Maquet. During her childhood, she developed a strong passion for music and began playing the piano and singing.
When she reached the age of sixteen, her family relocated to Miami. After spending a year attending an American high school, she made the independent decision to return to France. She enrolled at the IESEG School of Management in Lille, where she successfully earned a master's degree in Business Administration and Management in 2011. Her academic path also included a study exchange period in São Paulo, Brazil, which allowed her to learn Portuguese.
Beginning of music career
Alma took her first steps into the professional music world in 2012 by publishing early compositions online. Her very first published track, Gone, served as a tribute to a childhood friend who tragically passed away in an accident. She followed this release with other early songs such as Again and Elsewhere, which managed to capture attention on various French music blogs and online magazines.
To further refine her craft, she studied at ACP la Manufacture Chanson and began performing live at venues in Brussels and Paris. Her talent soon caught the attention of industry professionals, leading to radio broadcasts and televised appearances. In late 2013, she joined the weekly television show Les Chansons d'abord on France 3, where she performed regularly and even received praise from Celine Dion.
Eurovision and debut album
A major turning point in Alma's career arrived when she signed a recording contract with Warner Music France in April 2015. Throughout this period, she collaborated closely with songwriter Nazim Khaled to create new music. Their partnership resulted in the creation of the single La chute est lente and the track Ivre, establishing her presence in the contemporary French pop music scene.
In December 2016, it was announced that her song Requiem would serve as the French entry for the Eurovision Song Contest. She performed the track live at the grand final held in Kyiv, Ukraine, successfully finishing in twelfth place. Shortly after this international exposure, she released her debut full-length studio album titled Ma peau aime, which entered the French charts and featured several of her well-known singles.
Later musical projects
Following her Eurovision success, Alma continued to stay active in the music industry and television broadcasting. She served as a member of the domestic jury for the final of Destination Eurovision and later worked as a commentator for France 2 during the grand final of the Eurovision Song Contest. These roles allowed her to remain closely connected to the famous international competition that helped boost her career.
In late 2018, she shifted toward independent music distribution by releasing the self-published single T'es pas un homme, which addressed a personal assault she experienced on the subway. She followed this up with the release of the single Zumbaa in collaboration with Laurie Darmon, and later put out the track America on streaming platforms, continuing to write and record music independently.
