Who is Amerie?
Early life and background
Amerie: Born in Fitchburg, the artist grew up moving frequently due to her father serving in the military. She spent three years in South Korea as a child. Her family lived in locations including Alaska, Texas, Germany, and Virginia. Her mother is Korean and her father is Black American. She has a younger sister named Angela who works as a lawyer. During her youth, she and her sister followed strict rules set by their parents.
She attended Georgetown University to study literature. She participated in Navy ROTC to help pay for her college education but left after the second year. She eventually earned a bachelor's degree in English with a minor in fine arts.
Musical beginnings and debut
While attending Georgetown, she connected with a club promoter in Washington, D.C. This connection led to a meeting with music producer Rich Harrison. They met at a parking lot to review music tracks. She sang along to his beats, which led to a collaborative relationship. This partnership secured her a contract with Columbia Records.
Her first single, Why Don't We Fall in Love, appeared in 2002. It performed well on the Billboard Hot 100 and other R&B charts. Her first full album, All I Have, arrived that same year. It achieved gold certification from the RIAA and peaked at number nine on the Billboard 200 chart.
Success and acting roles
In 2003, she earned a Soul Train Music Award as Best New Artist. She also received nominations for BET and Image awards. She collaborated with artists like Nas, LL Cool J, and Bow Wow during this time. In 2004, she entered the film industry with a role in First Daughter alongside Katie Holmes.
Her second album, Touch, launched in 2005. The lead single, 1 Thing, became her most successful track. It topped the R&B charts and hit the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100. The song sampled a 1960s funk recording and received a gold certification. The album Touch also reached the top five on the Billboard 200 and earned gold status. This work resulted in Grammy nominations for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and Best Contemporary R&B Album.
Later projects and career
In 2006, she began working on her third studio album, Because I Love It. This project moved away from the production style of her previous records. She drew inspiration from 1980s music, including soul and new wave sounds. The single Take Control became a success in the United Kingdom. However, the album faced difficulties with promotion in the United States.
She later shifted her focus toward her own label, Feenix Rising, after signing a deal with Island Def Jam. Her fourth studio project, In Love & War, combined elements of hip-hop and rock. She released this record in 2009. These projects illustrate her history of blending genres and maintaining creative control over her visual and musical output.
