Who is Andrea Arnold?
Early life and education
Andrea Arnold was born in Dartford in the United Kingdom on April 5, 1961. She grew up on a council estate as the eldest of four children raised by her mother. During her youth, she wrote stories and left school at the age of sixteen.
After working in television for a decade, she moved to the United States to study directing at the AFI Conservatory in Los Angeles. This training helped her transition from working in front of the camera to behind it.
Television career
Andrea began her television career as a dancer on shows like Top of the Pops. She later gained public prominence as a presenter and actor on the children's television programme No. 73 during the 1980s. She played the character Dawn Lodge on the ITV series.
Her television work continued with presenting roles on Motormouth and writing for the environmental show A Beetle Called Derek. In later years, she returned to television as a director, helming episodes of Big Little Lies, Transparent, and I Love Dick.
Directing and film awards
Andrea transitioned to filmmaking with early short projects such as Milk and Dog. She won an Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film for her 2003 project Wasp. The film also earned the Sundance Short Film Prize.
She directed her debut feature film Red Road in 2006, which won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. She won the BAFTA Award for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer for the film. Her subsequent feature films Fish Tank and American Honey also competed at Cannes and won the Jury Prize.
Honours and recognition
In recognition of her contributions to cinema, Andrea was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the 2011 New Year Honours. Her work has received critical praise and multiple international film festival awards.
She completed an adaptation of Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights in 2011, which won the Golden Osella for Best Cinematography at the Venice International Film Festival. Her documentary feature Cow premiered at Cannes in 2021.
