Biography
Who is Andy McKee?
Early life and musical start
Andy McKee was born in Topeka, Kansas, in 1979. He began playing guitar at age 13 after receiving an Aria nylon string instrument from his father. While he initially found lessons uninspiring, he eventually began teaching himself by studying shred guitar music. He listened to artists like Metallica, Eric Johnson, and Joe Satriani during his formative years. After attending a live clinic by Preston Reed at age 16, he became deeply interested in acoustic techniques and purchased instructional material from Reed. He obtained his GED that same year to dedicate more time to the instrument.
His influences expanded to include acoustic guitarists such as Michael Hedges, Billy McLaughlin, and Pat Kirtley. He also drew inspiration from Don Ross and his work on Passion Session. These early years of independent study laid the foundation for his technical approach to the guitar, which he would later refine while producing his own compositions.
Rise to fame and YouTube
Andy McKee gained significant recognition through the internet, particularly YouTube. He was one of the first musicians to achieve viral fame on the platform, with several of his guitar performance videos earning millions of views. His video for the song Drifting helped propel him to prominence, leading to his association with Candyrat Records. At one point, he held the distinction of having three of his videos simultaneously rank among the most-watched clips on the site.
This digital success translated into mainstream opportunities. He appeared on television programs such as Last Call with Carson Daly and Woodsongs. Also, he contributed his skills to major studio projects, including Josh Groban's Grammy-nominated holiday album, Noël, where he played guitar on the track Little Drummer Boy. He also contributed to Lee Ritenour's 2010 project, 6 String Theory, appearing alongside well-known guitarists like Slash and Steve Lukather.

His discography also includes collaborative projects, such as a record with Don Ross titled The Thing That Came From Somewhere, and his first live album, Live Book, which captured performances from shows in Georgia and Alabama.
Beyond recording, Andy has expanded his career into education and production. In 2016, he launched a series of multi-day guitar workshops called Musicariums. These events have been held at various locations, including the Full Moon Resort in New York and the EarthRise Institute in California. He has also shared his expertise through online instruction, offering dedicated lessons and courses to students.
