Early life and education
Angela Bassett was born on August 16, 1958, in New York City. Her mother worked as a social worker and civil servant, while her father was connected to preaching. Following her parents' divorce when she was four years old, Angela moved with her mother and sister to St. Petersburg, Florida. During her youth, she participated in various school activities and eventually attended Boca Ciega High School where she joined the debate team and drama club.
After completing high school, Angela pursued higher education at Yale University. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in African American Studies in 1980 and continued at the same institution to study acting. She obtained a Master of Fine Arts from the Yale School of Drama in 1983.
