Early life
Anthony Edwards was born in Santa Barbara, California, on July 19, 1962. He grew up as one of five children born to an architect father and an artist mother who worked as a scene painter. His maternal grandfather was a German-born designer named Kem Weber, and Anthony also holds ancestry from England, Ireland, Scotland, and Mexico on his father's side. Growing up in California, he eventually attended San Marcos High School before pursuing his education further.
Rise to fame in film
Anthony began appearing in films during the early 1980s, securing roles in movies such as Fast Times at Ridgemont High in 1982 and Revenge of the Nerds in 1984. He followed these projects with appearances in Gotcha! And The Sure Thing in 1985. These early performances helped establish his presence in Hollywood as a versatile young performer capable of handling both comedic and dramatic material.
Television success on ER
Following his success in cinema, Anthony secured the role that defined his television career when he was cast as Dr. Mark Greene on the medical drama series ER. He starred on the program from its premiere in 1994 through the conclusion of its eighth season in 2002. His work on the series earned him widespread acclaim, four consecutive Primetime Emmy Award nominations, a Golden Globe Award, and multiple Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Later career and theater
After stepping away from his regular role on ER, Anthony dedicated time to raising his children while continuing to work selectively in film and television projects. His later movie credits included science fiction and thriller features such as Thunderbirds in 2004, The Forgotten in 2004, and David Fincher's crime drama Zodiac in 2007. He also voiced a fighter jet in the animated Disneytoon Studios film Planes in 2013.
Personal life
Anthony married Jeanine Lobell in 1994, and the couple raised four children together before their marriage ended in 2015. He later reconnected with his longtime friend and fellow actor Mare Winningham, and the pair eloped at the end of 2021. Outside of his professional acting and directing commitments, Anthony obtained his license as a private pilot in 2012.
