Biography
Who is Anthony Michael Hall?
Early life and family
Born Michael Anthony Thomas Charles Hall in West Roxbury, Massachusetts, the future actor spent his early childhood moving between the East and West Coasts. His mother, Mercedes Hall, was a blues-jazz singer who managed his career throughout the 1980s. After his parents divorced when he was six months old, Anthony relocated with his mother to California before eventually settling in New York City. He has a half-sister named Mary Chestaro, who performs as a singer under the name Mary C.
Anthony attended St. Hilda's & St. Hugh's School and later Manhattan's Professional Children's School. He transposed his first and middle names upon entering show business to avoid confusion with another Screen Actors Guild member named Michael Hall. He began working in commercials at age seven, appearing in advertisements for Bounty paper towels and Honeycomb cereal.
Rise to stardom with John Hughes
Anthony Michael Hall gained his first significant film notice in the 1982 Kenny Rogers movie Six Pack. Shortly thereafter, he appeared as Rusty Griswold in National Lampoon's Vacation, a role that caught the attention of writer and director John Hughes. This connection proved key, leading to a series of starring roles that defined his early career.
In 1984, he played the character known as the geek in Sixteen Candles, a film that turned him into a recognizable star. He followed this with high-profile performances in The Breakfast Club as Brian Johnson and in Weird Science as Gary Wallace. These roles secured his association with the Brat Pack, a group of young actors frequently appearing in teen-oriented films during that decade. While these parts made him famous, he eventually sought to avoid being typecast as the classic nerd figure.
Career evolution and Saturday Night Live
Seeking to diversify his portfolio, Anthony joined the cast of Saturday Night Live during the 1985–1986 season. At age seventeen, he became the youngest cast member in the show's history, performing impersonations of celebrities like Art Garfunkel and Robert F. Kennedy. Although he found the environment highly competitive and left after one season, he maintained that the experience was educational.
Following his time on the sketch show, he appeared in films such as Out of Bounds, Johnny Be Good, and Edward Scissorhands. He later portrayed Bill Gates in the 1999 television movie Pirates of Silicon Valley. His career saw a resurgence in the 2000s when he took the lead role in the USA Network science fiction series The Dead Zone, which ran from 2002 to 2007. During this period, he also appeared in the 2008 superhero blockbuster The Dark Knight.
