Asa Akira was born in New York City, United States, on January 3, 1985. She grew up in an upper middle-class family in Manhattan's SoHo neighborhood and attended private schools in New York and Japan. She lived in Tokyo for four years before moving back to the United States during her teens. Her real first name means morning in Japanese, and her professional surname was inspired by an anime film.
