Who is Ayo Edebiri?
Early life
Ayo Edebiri was born in Boston on October 3, 1995. Her mother is from Barbados, and her father is from Edo State, Nigeria. She grew up as an only child in the Dorchester neighborhood within a Pentecostal family and regularly attended church services with her parents.
She discovered her passion for comedy through an eighth-grade drama class. This interest led her to join the Yellow Submarine Improv club at Boston Latin School. She later attended New York University, where she initially studied teaching before shifting her major to dramatic writing.
Rise to fame
During her junior year of college, Ayo Edebiri began pursuing a career in comedy and secured an internship at the Upright Citizens Brigade. She performed stand-up comedy and co-created the scripted digital series Ayo and Rachel Are Single alongside her friend Rachel Sennott in 2020.
Her breakout television role arrived in 2022 when she joined the main cast of the FX comedy-drama series The Bear as aspiring sous chef Sydney Adamu. Her performance earned her widespread critical acclaim, a Primetime Emmy Award, and a Golden Globe Award.
