Biography
Who is Barry Gibb?
Early life and roots
Barry Alan Crompton Gibb was born in Douglas on the Isle of Man on September 1, 1946. His parents were Hugh Gibb and Barbara M. Pass. He grew up with his brothers Maurice, Robin, and Andy, as well as his older sister Lesley Evans. When Barry was nearly two years old, he suffered severe burns after a hot teapot accident at home. He spent over two months in Nobles Hospital recovering from the injury. In 1949, the family moved to a different home in Douglas. Barry attended Braddan School starting in 1951 before the family relocated to Willaston and later other parts of the town.
The family eventually left the United Kingdom in August 1958, sailing from Southampton to Australia on the ship Fairsea. This move marked a major shift in their lives, as Barry and his brothers began performing in Australia. By 1959, they were singing between races at the Redcliffe Speedway. This early exposure led to their discovery by a local radio disc jockey named Bill Gates, who showed interest in Barry's original compositions. The brothers continued to perform throughout the Gold Coast region during the early 1960s.
The Bee Gees and musical rise
Before the global fame of the Bee Gees, Barry Gibb formed a skiffle group in 1955 called the Rattlesnakes with his brothers and neighbors. The band performed songs by artists such as Buddy Holly and the Everly Brothers. By 1958, the group changed their name to Wee Johnny Hayes and the Blue Cats. They performed at local talent contests in Chorlton. After moving to Australia, the brothers adopted the name the Bee Gees. Barry wrote the group's early singles, and by 1963, they were signed to Festival Records.
In 1967, the band returned to the United Kingdom and signed with the Robert Stigwood Organization. Their first international album, Bee Gees' 1st, launched them into worldwide popularity. Barry became known for his wide vocal range, particularly his high-pitched falsetto. Despite personal and professional pressures, including a moment of nervous exhaustion in 1967, the group secured their place in music history. Barry Gibb has since been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the group.
