Early life and education
Benjamin Thomas Barnes was born in Cambridge, United Kingdom, on August 20, 1981. He grew up in southwest London with his parents, Patricia Becker and Thomas Barnes, and his younger brother, Jack. His mother worked as a relationship psychotherapist, while his father was a professor and psychiatrist. Ben Barnes attended Homefield Preparatory School in Sutton before continuing his studies at King's College School in Wimbledon.
University and early career
Ben Barnes studied English literature and drama at Kingston University. He directed and appeared in several theatrical productions, including The Zoo Story, The Golden Age, and Don Juan. He received the English Prize for his academic writing on themes from The Hobbit and Harry Potter. In 2004, he graduated with a BA in Drama with English Literature. He was the first drama student at his university to achieve first-class honours and was later inducted into the school's Wall of Fame in 2008.
Film and television success
He made his film debut in 2007 as young Dunstan Thorn in the movie Stardust. In 2008, he earned significant recognition for playing Prince Caspian in The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. He spent two months in New Zealand training for stunts and horseback riding to prepare for the part. He later returned as the character for the sequel, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Throughout his career, he has appeared in diverse roles, including the title character in Dorian Gray, Neil McCormick in Killing Bono, and Tom Ward in Seventh Son.
Music and soundtrack contributions
Beyond acting, Ben Barnes has contributed to the soundtracks of several films he appeared in. He sang three songs for the 2008 romantic comedy Easy Virtue. In 2021, he released his debut single titled 11:11, which was followed by his first extended play, Songs For You. He continued his musical career with the release of his debut studio album, Where The Light Gets In, on January 10, 2025.
