Biography
Who is Björn Ulvaeus?
Early life and background
Björn Ulvaeus Kristian Ulvaeus was born in the Lundby church parish in Sweden on April 25, 1945. When he was six years old, he moved with his family to Västervik in Kalmar County. His parents were Erik Gunnar Ulvaeus and Aina. During his youth in Sweden, he completed his military service and developed a strong musical interest influenced by various blues and folk artists.
Before achieving international success, he became a member of the Swedish folk-schlager band Hootenanny Singers, which enjoyed a big following across Scandinavia. While touring in southern Sweden in 1966, the band encountered the Hep Stars, leading to a fateful meeting with keyboard player Benny Andersson. The two musicians quickly bonded over a shared passion for songwriting and began composing music together.
Rise with ABBA
While filming a television special in May 1969, Björn met singer-songwriter Agnetha Fältskog. The two eventually married on July 6, 1971. Agnetha joined the musical collaboration between Björn and Benny, which expanded to include Frida Lyngstad and became the famous pop group ABBA. Björn served as the group's guitarist and occasionally provided lead vocals on several tracks.
ABBA achieved worldwide fame with numerous chart-topping hits and won the Eurovision Song Contest. The couple divorced in July 1980, and the band went on hiatus shortly afterward in 1982. Decades later, the members reunited to create the virtual concert residency known as ABBA Voyage, which opened in London at a purpose-built arena.
Musicals and later career
Following the initial hiatus of ABBA, Björn partnered with Benny Andersson to create successful stage musicals. Their collaborative works include Chess, with lyrics by Tim Rice, Kristina från Duvemåla, and the global hit Mamma Mia! Based on ABBA songs. These productions earned various award nominations, including Drama Desk Award and Tony Award recognitions.
In addition to his work in musical theatre, Björn has remained active in the music industry and technology space. He was appointed President of CISAC, the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers. In 2024, all four members of ABBA were appointed Commander, First Class, of the Royal Order of Vasa by King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden.
