Who is Brooke Fraser?
Early life and background
Brooke Fraser was born in Wellington, New Zealand. Her parents are Bernie Fraser, a former rugby player, and his wife Lynda. She grew up in Lower Hutt and attended schools including Naenae College. She has two brothers named Matthew and Shea.
As a child, she studied piano for ten years. By age twelve, she began writing her own songs. She taught herself how to play the acoustic guitar when she was fifteen years old. During her teenage years, she also started writing for a magazine called Soul Purpose and eventually became its editor in 2002.
Solo music career
In 2002, Brooke Fraser signed a record deal with Sony Music after a bidding contest between labels. Her debut studio album, What to Do with Daylight, launched in 2003. It reached the top spot on the New Zealand charts and earned seven times platinum status. She toured Australia and New Zealand alongside John Mayer and David Bowie shortly after this release.
Her second album, Albertine, followed in 2006. She wrote the title track about a young genocide victim she met in Rwanda. The album reached double platinum status in New Zealand and charted on the Billboard 200 in the United States. She later released the album Flags in 2010. This project included the successful single Something in the Water, which received radio airplay in several European countries including Germany and Italy.
Work with Hillsong Worship
Brooke joined the Australian church music group Hillsong Worship in 2005. She participated in several albums, including the 2006 project Mighty to Save. She co-wrote the song None But Jesus for the group.
She left the group in 2010 but returned in 2016 for a second tenure. During this time, she sang lead vocals on the track What a Beautiful Name. This song won a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance in 2018. Billboard later ranked it as the top Christian song of 2017. She stepped away from the group again following her work on the 2023 album Eight.
