Who is Burak Yılmaz?
Early life and education
Burak was born in Antalya, Turkey. His father, Fikret Yılmaz, was a goalkeeper for Antalyaspor. He attended Antalya High School. Burak started his football career at Antalyaspor. He signed his first pro deal in July 2002.
In the 2004-05 season, he scored his first two pro goals against Karşıyaka on 29 August 2004. He played 29 league games and scored 8 goals that year. This helped Antalyaspor avoid relegation. He also helped the team reach the Süper Lig in 2006.
Professional career in Turkey
Burak Yılmaz joined Beşiktaş in 2006. He played as a winger and scored 5 goals in 30 league games. He later had a brief time at Manisaspor. He played for Fenerbahçe during the 2008-09 season and wore the number 7 shirt. He played six games there without scoring. He spent one season on loan at Eskişehirspor.
In 2010, he moved to Trabzonspor on a permanent basis. Under manager Şenol Güneş, he had a major breakthrough. He scored 33 goals in the 2011-12 season to become the top scorer of the Süper Lig. He won a Turkish Cup and a Turkish Super Cup with the club.
Galatasaray and international clubs
He moved to Galatasaray in July 2012 for 5 million euros. He won two league titles in 2012-13 and 2014-15. He became the top scorer of the Süper Lig again in 2012-13. He scored his 100th career goal against Kayserispor on 28 October 2012. In the Champions League, he scored 6 goals in the group stage.
Burak played for Beijing Guoan in China starting in 2016 and scored 28 goals. He returned to Trabzonspor and Beşiktaş for second spells. In 2020, he joined the French club Lille. He helped them win their first league title in ten years. He scored a penalty against Angers in May 2021 to secure the title.
National team and coaching
Burak Yılmaz made his debut for the Turkey national team in 2006. He played in a friendly match against Azerbaijan. He scored 31 goals for his country. This makes him the second highest goalscorer in Turkey's history. He played his final international match in 2022.
In June 2022, he signed with Fortuna Sittard in the Netherlands. He scored a free-kick goal on his debut against Ajax on 6 August. He retired from playing on 5 June 2023. Now, he works as a head coach. He currently manages the Süper Lig club Çorum.
