Who is Candis Cayne?
Early life and education
Candis Cayne: Born in Maui, she has a fraternal twin brother named Dylan. Her parents worked as teachers at a Waldorf School, where the family also resided on campus.
She completed her secondary education at Henry Perrine Baldwin High School in Hawaii in 1989. Following graduation, she relocated to Los Angeles for one year to pursue professional training in dance.
Career beginnings and drag performance
In the early 1990s, Candis moved to New York City. She built a reputation as a choreographer and a drag performer. She performed regularly at the Boy Bar and was a featured act at Tour, a venue in Chelsea. She also participated in the annual Wigstock festival held in the East Village.
Around 1996, she began her gender transition. She appeared in the 1995 documentary film Wigstock: The Movie and had roles in Stonewall and To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar. For the latter, she also contributed as a choreographer.
Television roles and mainstream success
Candis reached a wider audience between 2007 and 2008 when she played Carmelita Rainer on the ABC drama Dirty Sexy Money. This role made her the first transgender actress to portray a recurring transgender character on a network television show.
Following this, she appeared as Alexis Stone in the sixth season of Nip/Tuck. She also served as a judge and dance instructor on RuPaul's Drag U, where she taught routines to songs like No Scrubs and Milkshake. Her career continued with a guest appearance on Necessary Roughness as Geraldine in 2011.
Advocacy and personal life
Candis has spoken about her desire to be viewed simply as a happy human being rather than a spokesperson for the transgender community. She supports the organization GLAAD and describes the LGBT community as the last great minority.
In 2015, she became the global creative director for the social network MOOVZ. Regarding her personal life, she was in a relationship with DJ Marco McDermott for over eight years until 2010. During this time, she helped raise his daughter, Satori.
