Who is Catherine Bell?
Early life and background
Catherine Bell was born on August 14, 1968, in London, United Kingdom. Her father worked as an architect under contract to an oil company in Iran, while her mother had travelled to London to study nursing. After her parents divorced when she was two years old, she was raised by her mother and maternal grandparents. The family eventually relocated to California's San Fernando Valley, where they spoke Persian at home.
During her teenage years, Catherine grew up as a tomboy who enjoyed skateboarding and playing football. She enrolled at UCLA to study medicine or research before leaving during her second year to accept a modelling job in Japan. Upon returning to the United States, she decided to pursue acting and studied at the Beverly Hills Playhouse with Milton Katselas. She also worked as a massage therapist for eight years at the Peninsula Hotel.
Television and film career
Catherine obtained her first television role with a single line on the 1990 sitcom Sugar and Spice. She also worked as an Isabella Rossellini body double in the 1992 film Death Becomes Her and appeared in the 1994 Dolph Lundgren film Men of War. In 1995, she secured a small role on the NBC series JAG, which later moved to CBS. She successfully auditioned for the recurring role of Marine Corps lawyer Sarah MacKenzie and continued playing the character until the show ended in 2005.
Beginning in 2007, Catherine starred as Denise Sherwood in the Lifetime ensemble drama series Army Wives. She also took on the starring role of Cassandra Cassie Nightingale in Hallmark's The Good Witch television movie in 2008, returning for multiple sequels and a related television series through 2021. Her later projects included starring in the Lifetime films Last Man Standing and Jailbreak Lovers, as well as reprising her JAG role on an episode of NCIS: Los Angeles.
Personal life and hobbies
Catherine is fluent in both English and Persian. Her personal interests include skiing, snowboarding, kickboxing, motorcycling, cross-stitching, and building model cars. During the Writers Guild of America strike, she took flying lessons in a Cirrus SR22. She is a practicing Scientologist and has lived in Los Angeles and Clearwater Beach, Florida.
