He made his official debut for the senior team in 1986. He established himself as a solid defensive midfielder, which earned him a transfer to Palmeiras in July 1991. The deal involved a fee of US$ 450,000. He became a staple of the squad and won multiple titles during his first tenure there.
International achievements

Professional club career

Under his leadership, the club won the 1999 Copa Libertadores title. In July 2000, he signed with the Spanish club Deportivo de La Coruña. Coaching and administrative roles

He returned to Palmeiras as a director in November 2011 and served until January 2013. In 2016, he took a director role at Fortaleza. He also served as the president of Comercial do Tietê starting in 2015.
He later joined Tite’s coaching staff for the Brazil national team, participating in the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Following a brief time at Flamengo, he returned to Santos in January 2025 as an assistant coach. By August 2025, he moved into the role of technical coordinator at the club.
