Who is Chelsea Handler?
Early life and schooling
Chelsea Handler was born in Livingston, New Jersey, on February 25, 1975. She was the youngest of six children born to Rita, a homemaker, and Seymour Handler, who worked as a used-car dealer. Her upbringing included religious influences from both Judaism and Mormonism. She attended Reform Judaism services and had a Bat Mitzvah as a young person.
During her youth, her family spent summers at a house they owned on Martha's Vineyard. She attended Livingston High School, where she often felt like an outsider. At age 19, she moved from New Jersey to the Los Angeles area to stay with an aunt. She lived in Bel Air while working as a waitress and attempting to find acting opportunities. She decided to focus on stand-up comedy at age 21 after sharing a story about a driving arrest with a class of other offenders who found the anecdote humorous.
Television hosting career
She appeared on reality shows early in her career, including the hidden camera program Girls Behaving Badly from 2002 to 2005. She was also a commentator for E! And Scarborough Country. In 2007, she launched her own late-night talk show, Chelsea Lately, on the E! Network. The program aired over 1,000 episodes and concluded in 2014.
Chelsea Handler hosted the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. She was the second woman to solo host that ceremony. In 2016, she debuted the documentary series Chelsea Does on Netflix, followed by a talk show titled Chelsea. She later produced a documentary on white privilege titled Hello, Privilege. It's Me, Chelsea, which arrived in 2019.
Acting and production work
Beyond hosting, she appeared in shows like The Bernie Mac Show and The Practice. She also executive produced several programs through her company, Borderline Amazing Productions. This included the reality series Pretty Wild and talk shows for personalities like Whitney Cummings and Ross Mathews. She also produced the sitcom Are You There, Chelsea?, which was based on her book.
In 2017, she began developing a drama series with TNT based on the book I Hate the Internet. That same year, she started working with Hulu to adapt the book The Unspeakable into a dramedy series. She continues to work as a producer and performer, announcing in 2020 that she would star in a stand-up special for HBO Max.
