Early life and education
Chris Cooper: Christopher Walton Cooper was born on July 9, 1951, in Kansas City, Missouri. His father, Charles, worked as a physician for the United States Air Force and also managed cattle. His mother, Mary Ann, was a homemaker. During his childhood, the family relocated frequently due to his father's military service, living in places like Phoenix, Arizona, and Houston, Texas. He also spent time at a family-owned cattle ranch near Leavenworth, Kansas.
Academic training and stage career
Chris enrolled at the University of Missouri to study theater. He initially focused on set design but switched his major to acting during his sophomore year to help overcome personal shyness. He took classes at the university and also studied dance at Stephens College. After earning his degree, he moved to New York City in 1976 to pursue professional acting work. To support himself in the city, he held various jobs including construction, janitorial work, and driving.
Rise to fame and major films
His breakthrough in television came with the 1989 miniseries Lonesome Dove, where he played Sheriff July Johnson. In the film industry, he gained attention for his collaboration with director John Sayles, starting with the 1987 project Matewan. His portfolio includes appearances in many significant Hollywood movies. These titles include A Time to Kill, October Sky, and the 1999 drama American Beauty. He also appeared in the action movie The Bourne Identity in 2002 and its sequel.
Family and personal life
Chris met his wife, Marianne Leone, in a New York City acting class in 1979. They married in July 1983. The couple had one son, Jesse Lanier Cooper, born in October 1987. Their son was born prematurely and faced health challenges, including cerebral palsy, but became an honors student in high school. Tragically, Jesse died unexpectedly due to epilepsy in early 2005. The family established the Jesse Cooper Foundation in his memory.
