Early life and background
Coco Rocha was born Mikhaila Rocha in Toronto, Ontario, and grew up in Richmond, British Columbia. During her youth, she attended Hugh McRoberts Secondary School. Her family background includes roots in the airline industry, alongside Irish and Ukrainian heritage. She grew up alongside two siblings in Canada.
Before entering the fashion industry, she had never considered modeling. Her initial entry into the field occurred when an agent discovered her at an Irish dance competition in 2002. At that time, her knowledge of the fashion world was extremely limited, but she quickly began shooting extensive editorial looks.
Modeling career highlights
Early in her career, Coco spent time shooting numerous looks a day in Asia before relocating to New York. She signed an exclusive contract with photographer Steven Meisel and soon appeared on the cover of Vogue Italia. She earned the nickname the Queen of Pose due to her unique skill and creativity during photo shoots.
During major fashion weeks, she walked for top designers such as Anna Sui, Marc Jacobs, and Jean Paul Gaultier. Her famous runway appearance for Gaultier involved Irish dancing down the catwalk, which American Vogue dubbed the Coco Moment. She has since been the face of countless global advertising campaigns and magazine covers.
Television and writing ventures
Coco expanded her career into television and publishing. She appeared in the 2009 documentary film The September Issue and served as a coach on the reality television series The Face alongside other prominent figures. She also appeared as a guest judge on multiple cycles of Project Runway and various international versions of Top Model.
As an author, she collaborated on the 2014 book Study of Pose with photographer Steven Sebring. In addition to her publishing work, she became the host of the Project Runway Canada reboot on Crave. Her industry contributions include founding a dedicated model camp to train newcomers.
