Who is Cris Morena?
Early life and real name
María Cristina De Giacomi was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She grew up in the Palermo neighborhood within an upper-class family. Her mother worked as a sociologist while her father was an engineer.
She attended a private religious school during her childhood. At the age of 17, she worked as a fashion model and served as a prominent face for Lee Jeans in Argentina. During her university years, she studied social assistance and was active alongside Padre Carlos Mugica during the Argentine dictatorship.
How Cris became famous
Cris Morena began her television career at 17 when she hosted the youth program Voltop. While working on this show, she met Gustavo Yankelevich, who was part of the staff. They married in 1974 after having two children.
After a period away from the industry to focus on her family, she returned to acting in 1979. She played the character Laura Moreno in the telenovela Dulce Fugitiva. She eventually adopted the stage name Cris Morena based on that character's surname.
Career highlights
In 1980, Cris decided to begin composing music as she was already a pianist. She eventually became one of the most successful songwriters in Argentina. She holds a significant place in SADAIC history for her earnings from copyrights and album sales. Her work includes hits written for the host Flavia Palmiero.
She transitioned into television production in 1991 by creating Jugate Conmigo. This move led to the creation of many famous youth franchises such as Chiquititas, Rebelde Way, and Floricienta. These programs achieved big commercial success and reached audiences in countries like Brazil, Greece, Israel, Spain, Uruguay, Mexico, and Chile.
Family and relationships
Cris Morena married Gustavo Yankelevich in December 1974, though the couple divorced in 1996. Her children, Romina Yan and Tomás Yankelevich, both worked in the entertainment industry. Romina was an actress known for her role in Chiquititas.
Following the death of her daughter Romina in 2010, Cris Morena took a hiatus from the industry. She closed her production company for two years before returning to television with the show Aliados in 2012. She has since announced new projects for the streaming service Max, including Te quiero y me duele and Margarita.
