Early life and background
Daniel Powter grew up in Coldstream, located outside of Vernon within the Okanagan Valley region of British Columbia. During his childhood, he began playing the violin at four years old before switching to piano at sixteen years old due to bullying. He attended Vernon Secondary School and later studied at MacEwan University.
He eventually left his university studies, partly due to dyslexia, in order to pursue a full time music career. Early in his creative path, Daniel formed a pop rock band in Victoria, British Columbia, which won an award that enabled the group to produce a CD. Rise to fame with Bad Day
In his late twenties, Daniel met producer Jeff Dawson in Vancouver and released his debut album titled I'm Your Betty on June 21, 2000, through the independent label Outside Music. Several tracks from this release were featured on the Canadian television show Higher Ground. He subsequently wrote the hook for the song Bad Day while riding a ferry between Victoria and Vancouver.
After recording a demo with Jeff Dawson and securing a music manager in Los Angeles, Daniel signed with Warner Bros. Music and recorded a self titled album. Bad Day gained big international attention after being used extensively on the fifth season of the television series American Idol. The single reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, Adult Top 40, and Adult Contemporary charts, making him the first solo Canadian male artist to top the Hot 100 since 1995.
Awards and music career
Daniel received significant recognition for his music, including a nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance at the 49th Grammy Awards for Bad Day. He also won the Juno Award for Breakthrough Artist of the Year in 2006.
