During his school years, he began participating in local youth theatre activities and joined a small group from a children's theatre in December 2003.
In 2009, David enrolled in a three-year acting and language course at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. He wanted to improve his English and acting abilities for international film work, but he left the institution at the end of that same year to focus entirely on his acting career.

Following this success, David worked with Buck again on Hands off Mississippi as an apprentice baker. He then took on the title role in Krabat, an adaptation of Otfried Preussler's children's book. The movie featured fellow actors Daniel Brühl and Robert Stadlober, and it premiered in theatres in October 2008.

The world premiere of The Reader took place in New York in December 2008. For his work in the movie, David received a Chopard trophy at the Cannes Festival and earned a nomination for a European Film Award as best actor. He also won a Las Vegas Film Critics Society Award for his performance.
