David Tennant was born David John McDonald in Bathgate, United Kingdom, on April 18, 1971. He grew up with an older brother and sister as the son of Sandy McDonald and Essdale Helen McDonald. From an early age, he wanted to pursue acting after watching science fiction television.
He attended Paisley Grammar School and later trained at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. To avoid confusion with another performer registered with the actors union Equity, he adopted a stage name inspired by the frontman of the Pet Shop Boys before legally changing his surname later in life.

David began his professional career working in theatre productions and small television parts. His breakthrough arrived when he portrayed Campbell Bain in the television drama Takin Over the Asylum.
