Biography

Who is Dido?

Early life

Dido was born Florian Cloud de Bounevialle Armstrong at St Mary Abbots Hospital in Kensington, London, on December 25, 1971. Her mother, Clare, worked as a poet, while her father, William O'Malley Armstrong, served as an Irish publisher. She grew up alongside her elder brother, Rowland Constantine O'Malley Armstrong, who became known as the record producer Rollo.

During her childhood, she attended several educational institutions including Thornhill Primary School, Dallington School, City of London Girls' School, and Westminster School. After she took a recorder from school at age five, her parents enrolled her at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. By age nine, she toured Yugoslavia with a recorder orchestra and learned to play the piano and violin in her teens.

Musical beginnings

Before pursuing a solo career, Dido provided vocals and co-wrote tracks for Faithless, the electronic music act formed by her brother Rollo. In 1995, she recorded ten demo tracks that formed a collection titled Odds & Ends. Nettwerk management signed her after hearing these early recordings, and the collection was released on CD-R and acetate disc.

Peter Edge from Arista Records discovered her work through Odds & Ends and signed her in the United States in late 1996. This led to a co-sign deal with Cheeky Records, her brother's independent record label. During this period, Peter Leak became her manager as she prepared material for her upcoming debut release.

Rise to international success

Dido attained global recognition with her debut studio album, No Angel, released in 1999. The record featured successful singles such as Here with Me and Thank You. The track Here with Me gained widespread attention after serving as the theme music for the television show Roswell, while Thank You was sampled by American rapper Eminem in his song Stan.

No Angel became a major commercial triumph, selling over 21 million copies worldwide and earning top positions on international music charts. Her follow-up album, Life for Rent, arrived in 2003 and continued her chart success with popular singles including White Flag and Life for Rent. Both records established her among the best-selling artists of that decade in the United Kingdom.

Later career and releases

Following her early career peaks, Dido released her third studio album, Safe Trip Home, in 2008. She later made a music comeback in 2013 with her fourth album, Girl Who Got Away, which reached the top five on the UK charts. Around this time, she took time away from the industry to raise her son before returning to perform at the Reading and Leeds festival.

In March 2019, she released her fifth studio album, Still on My Mind, and started on a tour. Later that year, she received the Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Song Collection from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers, and Authors. In 2020, she co-released a collaborative album titled The Last Summer with her brother Rollo.
