Early life and real name
Mary Elizabeth Spacek was born on Christmas Day in 1949, in Quitman, Texas. Her mother was Virginia Spilman and her father was Edwin Arnold Spacek. She grew up in Texas and attended Quitman High School. Her brothers called her Sissy, which became the nickname she used professionally throughout her career.
A major turning point in her early life was the death of her nineteen-year-old brother Robbie from leukemia in 1967. She later described this tragedy as a defining moment that made her fearless and brave in her personal life and her acting career.
How Sissy became famous
