Early life and career beginnings

He started playing football at his hometown club, Club Atlético Libertad, where his father also played. By December 1998, he broke into the first team squad and celebrated winning the league title at just eighteen years of age. Shortly after, he moved to Montevideo to join Club Nacional de Football in 1999. Before establishing his senior career, he spent time on loan at the club Plaza Colonia for a full season.

Club career in Brazil and Europe
In 2003, Diego Lugano arrived at São Paulo FC in Brazil. The club president signed him without consulting the coach, which led to the player earning the nickname President's Man. He became a key figure in 2005, leading the team to victories in the Campeonato Paulista, the Copa Libertadores, and the FIFA Club World Championship in Japan. Following this success, he moved to Turkey to play for Fenerbahçe in August 2006. During his time there, he helped the team secure a league title during their centennial year. He became a fan favourite with his defensive tenacity and his spectacular play from free kick situations.
He later played for several clubs, including Paris Saint-Germain, Málaga CF, and West Bromwich Albion. At West Bromwich Albion, he scored his first goal in January 2014 against Everton. He eventually returned to South America, joining the Paraguayan team Cerro Porteño in 2015. During his stint in Paraguay, he scored goals against General Díaz, Sol de America, and Deportivo Santani. He finalized his playing career by returning for a second spell at São Paulo FC in 2016.
