Biography

Who is Dieter Bohlen?

Early life and real name

Dieter Bohlen was born on February 7, 1954, in Berne, Germany. His parents were building contractor Hans Bohlen and Edith Bohlen, and he grew up with his younger brother Uwe in East Frisia. He was given the full name Dieter Günther Bohlen at birth, though he later chose to officially drop his second given name.

After moving to Eversten and later to Oldenburg, he completed his secondary education at the Wirtschaftsgymnasium der Berufsbildenden Schulen in Oldenburg-Haarentor. He then moved to Göttingen to study business administration at the Georg-August-Universität at the request of his parents. He finished his university education in 1978 with a degree.

Music career beginnings

While still a student, Dieter began writing music and working as a songwriter for Schlager singers at the Hamburg-based label Intersong in the late 1970s. In 1978, he founded a short-lived duo named Monza alongside Holger Garbode. Their first single was titled Hallo Taxi Nummer 10, which was followed by a second single named Heiß Nacht in der City. Neither record achieved commercial success.

By 1980, he started working for the Berlin-based label Hansa. Under the pseudonym Steve Benson, he released a solo single in English titled Don't Throw My Love Away. This was followed by Love Takes Time and (You're A Devil With) Angel Blue Eyes in 1981. After these singles failed to reach the top 100, he abandoned the project and briefly joined the band Sunday.

Success with Modern Talking

After producing several unsuccessful German singles for Schlager singer Thomas Anders between 1982 and 1984, Dieter and Anders founded the pop duo Modern Talking. The group achieved big international success by topping the German singles chart five consecutive times with the songs You're My Heart, You're My Soul, You Can Win If You Want, Cheri, Cheri Lady, Brother Louie, and Atlantis Is Calling (S.O.S. For Love).

Following the group's split in 1987, Dieter launched his solo project Blue System, which lasted for ten years. He also wrote and produced music for numerous other performers, including C. C. Catch, Sheree, and the boy band Touché. In 1998, Modern Talking made a successful comeback with releases like You're My Heart, You're My Soul '98 and Win the Race before separating permanently in 2003.

Television and other projects

In 2002, the German singing competition Deutschland sucht den Superstar premiered with Dieter as a permanent judge. He also became a judge on Das Supertalent when the show launched in 2007. In addition to his television work, he published multiple books, including his autobiography Nichts als die Wahrheit in collaboration with journalist Katja Kessler.

His career has also involved extensive soundtrack work, such as composing the music for the ZDF series Rivalen der Rennbahn. He collaborated with various international and domestic acts over the decades, producing albums for artists like Bonnie Tyler and Roy Black, and working extensively with Schlager singer Andrea Berg.
