Who is Doda?
Early life and real name
Dorota Rabczewska was born in Ciechanon, Poland, on February 15, 1984. During her youth, she focused heavily on athletics and competed in various sports such as the long jump, 100 meters, and shot put. She won several medals at the Voivodeship Championships and the Polish Championships before deciding to shift her focus entirely toward a musical career.
As a teenager, she made her professional debut in 1998 at the Buffo Theatre in Warsaw by performing in the musical Metro. Around the same time, she took singing lessons from Elzbieta Zapendowska, who is recognized as one of the most famous singing coaches in Poland.
Rise to fame with Virgin
After successfully auditioning at the age of sixteen, Doda became the lead vocalist for the Polish hard rock band Virgin. The group released their self-titled debut studio album in 2002, which was promoted by singles such as To Ty and Mam tylko Ciebie. To help promote the band further, she participated in the Polish version of the reality television series The Bar.
The band followed up with their second studio album, Bimbo, in 2004, which debuted at number one on the Polish Album Sales Chart and featured the mainstream hit Dzaga. Their third album, Ficca, was released in 2005 and featured a more radio-friendly pop-rock sound. Following health challenges and a temporary hiatus, the band disbanded at the start of 2007.
Solo career and hit albums
Following the disbandment of Virgin, Doda signed a solo recording contract with Universal Music Poland and released her debut solo studio album, Diamond Bitch, in July 2007. The album went straight to number one on the Polish Album Sales Chart and stayed there for five consecutive weeks, eventually earning a platinum certification from the Polish Society of the Phonographic Industry.
Her single Nie daj sie, released in June 2008, received big radio airplay and remains one of the biggest hits of her solo career. She later released her second studio album, 7 pokus glownych, in May 2011, which introduced an electro-rock musical style and also earned a platinum certification.
Awards and recognition
Throughout her career, Doda has earned numerous accolades and industry recognition. She is a three-time winner of the MTV Europe Music Award for Best Polish Act and has received ten VIVA Comet Awards. Media outlets and publications have frequently ranked her among the most influential women and music artists in Poland.
