Biography
Who is Donovan?
Early life and background
Donovan Phillips Leitch was born on May 10, 1946, in Maryhill, Glasgow. His parents were Donald and Winifred Leitch. During his childhood, he suffered from polio, which resulted in a permanent limp. His family eventually relocated to the town of Hatfield in Hertfordshire, England.
He began learning the guitar at the age of 14 due to his family's interest in folk music. Although he enrolled in art school, he eventually left his studies to pursue a life on the road as a beatnik. He purchased his first guitar and a signature fisherman's cap in St Ives, Cornwall, during the early 1960s.
Musical rise and fame
He first gained public attention through live appearances on the television series Ready Steady Go! In 1965. After signing with Pye Records, he released folk-style singles and two albums via Hickory Records. These recordings included three UK hits: Catch the Wind, Colours, and Universal Soldier.
His success grew internationally after he moved to the CBS/Epic label in the United States. During this period, he worked closely with producer Mickie Most. His 1966 single Sunshine Superman reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in America, while Mellow Yellow hit number two in the US in December 1966. Other well-known tracks include Hurdy Gurdy Man and Atlantis.
Influences and musical peers
The musician maintained friendships with several famous artists, including the Beatles and Brian Jones. He especially taught John Lennon a specific finger-picking guitar technique in 1968, which Lennon used on songs like Julia and Dear Prudence. His backing bands featured talented musicians such as Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones, who later formed Led Zeppelin.
In the mid-1960s, the music press frequently compared him to Bob Dylan. While he acknowledged Dylan as an influence, he maintained that he was not a mere copyist. He participated in the documentary film Dont Look Back, where he met Dylan at the Savoy Hotel and performed the song To Sing For You.
Later years and residence
After a period of leaving the music industry following a split with Mickie Most in 1969, he continued to record intermittently throughout the 1970s and 1980s. In 1994, he relocated permanently to Ireland. His musical career saw a resurgence during the 1990s alongside the British rave scene.
He released the album Sutras in 1996 with producer Rick Rubin and followed this with Beat Cafe in 2004. His contributions to music were recognized when he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012. He also received induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2014.
