Early life and background
Dylan Walsh was born Charles Hunter Walsh in Los Angeles, California, on November 17, 1963. His grandfather worked as a managing editor for the Los Angeles Times. Because his parents worked for the Foreign Service after meeting in Ethiopia, he spent his childhood living in Kenya, India, Pakistan, and Indonesia. His family moved back to the United States when he turned ten years old and settled in Virginia.
During his time at Annandale High School in Virginia, Dylan began acting on stage. He continued his education at the University of Virginia, where he earned a degree in English in 1986. After finishing college, he relocated to New York City to pursue professional acting. While working as a waiter at the Empire Diner, he met Julia Roberts, who introduced him to her manager Robert McGowan, leading to his first management representation.

Dylan made his screen debut in a television movie titled Soldier Boys alongside James Earl Jones. He subsequently appeared in the feature film Loverboy and secured a regular role on the television series Kate & Allie. In 1989, he officially began using the professional name Dylan Walsh. Later, Dylan starred as Lieutenant Al Burns across all four seasons of the CBS crime drama memorable between 2011 and 2016. In April 2020, he joined the cast of The CW action series Superman & Lois as Sam Lane, the father of Lois Lane.

Dylan was married to actress Melora Walters from 1996 until their divorce in 2003. Together, they had two children named Thomas and Joanna. Following that marriage, he married actress Joanna Going on October 10, 2004, and they had a daughter named Stella. In 2010, Dylan announced he had filed for divorce from his second wife.
He later met Leslie Bourque, with whom he had two children named Amelie Belle and Hudson Scott. Dylan and Bourque got married on June 3, 2022, in New Orleans, Louisiana. In August 2025, Dylan was involved in a single car accident in Rumson, New Jersey, with his wife and two children after striking a utility pole. Police issued him several citations for motor vehicle violations, and his team clarified that his blood alcohol content tested below the legal limit.
