Who is Ellen Barkin?
Early life and education
Ellen Barkin was born on April 16, 1954, in the Bronx, New York. Her father, Sol Barkin, worked as a chemical salesman, while her mother, Evelyn, was a hospital administrator at Jamaica Hospital. Her family has roots in Siberia and the border regions of Ukraine and Poland.
She attended Parsons Junior High School and later graduated from the High School of Performing Arts in Manhattan. Following high school, she studied history and drama as a double major at Hunter College. She later pursued further training at the Actors Studio in New York City.
Film and television career
The actress achieved her first major breakthrough in the 1982 film Diner. This role led to several prominent parts in movies such as Tender Mercies, Eddie and the Cruisers, and The Big Easy. In 1991, she earned a Golden Globe nomination for her acting in the movie Switch.
Her filmography includes many titles such as Sea of Love, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and Ocean's Thirteen. On television, she played Jane Forrest in the sitcom The New Normal and the character Janine Smurf Cody in the drama series Animal Kingdom from 2016 to 2019. She also starred in the Showtime series Happyish in 2015.
