Who is Elseid Hysaj?
Early life and background
Elseid Hysaj was born in Reç, Shkodër, Albania. His father, Gëzim, moved to Italy for work two months after his birth to find employment. While his father worked as a bricklayer in Italy, Elseid grew up in Shkodër alongside his mother and grandparents.
His path in football began at age seven with the amateur club KF Shkodra. In 2007, he joined the Vllaznia youth system for two years. A football agent named Marco Piccioli noticed his potential when Elseid was ten years old and advised his father to wait a few years before pursuing professional opportunities.
Professional beginnings at Empoli
At age 14, he moved to Italy to undergo trials with clubs such as Fiorentina. He eventually joined the Empoli academy and played for their under-19 side during the 2011–12 season. He made 21 appearances and scored one goal for the Primavera squad.
His senior debut for Empoli occurred on 24 November 2011, during a Coppa Italia match against Fiorentina. He became a regular starter during the 2012–13 season, playing in both legs of the promotion playoffs against Novara and Livorno. He finished that season with 35 total appearances and one assist.
Success with SSC Napoli
Elseid Hysaj transferred to SSC Napoli in July 2015 for a fee of €5 million. He quickly became a frequent starter, making his competitive debut against Sassuolo in August 2015. During his time with the club, he played over 220 matches across all competitions.
He was a key part of the squad that won the 2019–20 Coppa Italia. His performances earned him recognition, including being named in a Best Serie A Under-23 XI and being called the best right-back in the league by Calciomercato.it during the 2015–16 season.
Lazio and international career
After his contract ended in 2021, he joined SS Lazio on a free transfer. During his time with the club, he helped the team achieve a runner-up finish in Serie A, which was the club's best result in over two decades.
On the international stage, he has earned 100 caps for the Albania men's national football team since 2013. He has served as the team captain on several occasions. He represented his country at the UEFA European Championship in both 2016 and 2024.
