Biography
Who is Érika Cristiano dos Santos?
Early life and football beginnings
Érika Cristiano dos Santos began her interest in football at a very young age. When she was only six years old, she became the first female student at the football school run by Marcelinho Carioca. Her early training included playing futebol de salão for Associação Sabesp, where the rules were modified to let her compete against adult players by the time she was 12.
Her mother helped secure a spot for her at Clube Atlético Juventus, which served as her entry into outdoor football. This environment quickly brought her to the attention of national youth team scouts and the major women's club, Santos. By her early teens, she was already participating in international youth tournaments, including the 2004 FIFA U-19 Women's World Championship.
Club career and international success
Érika has played for several well-known clubs throughout her career. She spent multiple periods with Santos, winning the Campeonato Paulista in 2007 and the 2008 Copa do Brasil. In 2009, she joined the American franchise FC Gold Pride for one season. Following the dissolution of the Santos women's section in 2012, she moved to Centro Olímpico. She also played for Paris Saint-Germain between 2015 and 2018, where she won the Coupe de France before returning to Brazil to join Corinthians.
Her career with the Brazilian national team is extensive. She was a member of the silver medal-winning squad at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and played in multiple FIFA Women's World Cup tournaments. Despite facing several injury setbacks, including multiple anterior cruciate ligament injuries, she remained a key figure for Brazil. She participated in her fourth Olympic Games at the Tokyo 2020 event, which was held in 2021 due to the pandemic.
Advocacy and personal challenges
Beyond her performance on the pitch, Érika is a vocal advocate for the development of women's football in her home country. She has publicly criticized the lack of investment and support for female athletes in Brazil. In 2014, she signed an open letter along with 100 other female athletes, calling out what she described as a sexist culture within the sport's administration.
Throughout her professional path, she has dealt with significant injuries that required long recovery periods. This included a lengthy absence after an injury in late 2013 and another in 2021 while training in Paraguay. Despite these physical challenges and the financial instability of some clubs she played for, she has maintained a long career, securing numerous titles with Corinthians, including the Copa Libertadores Femenina and the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A1.
