Who is Gianluca Bezzina?
Early life and education
Gianluca Bezzina grew up in Qrendi, Malta, as the third of seven siblings in a musical family. His maternal grandfather was a pioneer in using the Maltese language in pop music and encouraged his early musical development. Gianluca started studying the piano accordion at age seven and sang with the Malta Children's Choir.
For his education, Gianluca attended St Aloysius College before studying at the University of Malta. He qualified as a medical doctor and began practicing his profession in July 2012 while continuing to pursue his music career.
Eurovision and musical career
Gianluca entered the Maltese national selection contest just for fun during his first participation. He won the national final with the song Tomorrow and represented Malta in the Eurovision Song Contest held in Malmö, Sweden. He secured fourth place in the semi-final and finished eighth in the grand final.
His Eurovision entry became the first Maltese song to enter the UK Singles Chart, where it peaked at number 37. Upon returning to Malta, he received a warm welcome from fans and family members at the airport.
Bands and television work
Beyond his solo work, Gianluca served as the frontman for the band Funk Initiative. The group won the Isle of MTV Battle of the Bands Competition and opened a major concert in Floriana. He also performed with other musical groups such as Pilgrim and King, The Tailors, Mogadishu, and The Travellers.
In television, Gianluca co-presented the Malta Eurovision Song Contest and released his debut album Waiting for Tomorrow. He later expanded his television presence by working as a coach on The Voice Kids Malta and serving as a judge on X Factor Malta.
