Early life and education
Nihat Haluk Bilginer was born on June 5, 1954, in the city of İzmir, Turkey. He pursued his initial training by graduating from the Ankara State Conservatory in 1977. Seeking further development in his craft, he moved to London, England.
While in the United Kingdom, he attended the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. This education provided the foundation for his future work in both British and Turkish productions.
International television and film career
Haluk Bilginer first achieved well-known recognition in the United Kingdom during the 1980s. He portrayed the character Mehmet Osman on the popular soap opera EastEnders between 1985 and 1989. His performance as a recurring character who eventually became a regular made him a recognized face on British television.
He later expanded his presence into Hollywood and international cinema. He appeared in the 2009 thriller The International alongside Naomi Watts and Clive Owen. His filmography also includes roles in the 2016 production Ben-Hur and the 2018 slasher sequel Halloween, where he played Dr. Ranbir Sartain. In 2020, he took on the role of Dr. Grief in the series Alex Rider. By 2023, he starred as Çetin İkmen in the series The Turkish Detective.

Returning to his home country, he built a significant career in Turkish media. He starred in films such as Masumiyet, where he earned a supporting actor award, and the critically acclaimed Winter Sleep, which won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. His role as a retired court clerk in the series Şahsiyet earned him an International Emmy Award for Best Actor.
Beyond acting on screen, he dedicated time to the theatre. In 1990, he co-founded a theatre company called Tiyatro Stüdyosu with his then-wife Zuhal Olcay and Ahmet Levendoğlu. Following a fire that destroyed that venue, he later established a second theatre, Oyun Atölyesi, to continue his stage work. He has also starred in various Turkish series, including Tatlı Hayat, which was a local adaptation of The Jeffersons.
Personal life and relationships
Haluk Bilginer has been married twice throughout his life. He married actress and singer Zuhal Olcay in 1992 after meeting while working on the series Gecenin Öteki Yüzü. The couple eventually divorced in 2004.
In 2006, he married the Turkish singer Aşkın Nur Yengi. They have one daughter together from their marriage. The couple divorced in 2012. Also, he has had a relationship with the actress Zerrin Tekindor.
