Love Marie Payawal Ongpauco was born on February 14, 1985, in Manila, Philippines. Her family has roots in the restaurant industry through the Barrio Fiesta chain. She spent some of her childhood years living in San Francisco before returning to the Philippines during her early teens.
After returning home, she attended Colegio de San Agustin in Makati. She also studied through the ABS-CBN Distance Learning Center. Her professional nickname, Heart, was inspired by her Valentine's Day birth date.

Heart Evangelista entered the entertainment industry in 1999 as part of Star Magic's Star Circle Batch 9. She made her television debut in the year 2000 on the series G-mik. This role led to her winning a PMPC Star Award for Best New Female TV Personality in 2001.
