Who is Henry Golding?
Early life and family
Henry Golding Ewan Golding was born on February 5, 1987, in the town of Betong, Sarawak, Malaysia. His mother, Margaret Likan, is a Malaysian of Iban ancestry, and his father, Clive Golding, is English. He is the youngest of three children in his family.
The family lived in Malaysia and Terengganu before moving to the countryside of Surrey, England, when Henry was eight years old. He attended The Warwick School during his youth. After working as a hairdresser on Sloane Street in London, he eventually moved back to Malaysia at the age of 21 to pursue on-camera roles in Kuala Lumpur.
Television and presenter career
Henry began working as a television presenter in 2008. His early broadcasting work included presenting a weekly football show for ESPN, The Travel Show for the BBC, and Surviving Borneo for Discovery Channel Asia.
During his time with Discovery Channel Asia, he filmed his bejalai, which is the Iban rite of passage into manhood, in the wilderness of Borneo. He carried his own camera equipment for the documentary series and received a traditional hand-tapped tattoo in Kuching.
Film career and major roles
In March 2017, after a global casting call, it was announced that Henry would star in the romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians. The film was released in August 2018, became a major box office success, and brought him international recognition.
Following that breakthrough, he appeared in several prominent films. He co-starred in the thriller A Simple Favor, played a role in the romantic comedy Last Christmas, and starred in Guy Ritchie's crime film The Gentlemen. He also took on the title role in the action-adventure movie Snake Eyes and appeared in The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.
Personal life and marriage
Henry met Liv Lo, a Taiwanese television presenter and yoga instructor, on New Year's Day in 2011. The couple became engaged in 2015 and married in August 2016 in Sarawak. They live in Venice Beach, California, with their two daughters, who were born in 2021 and 2023.
